Have you ever heard the saying that, “Cats are like potato chips – you can’t
have just one!” Most of us kitty lovers find this to be true.
When we do rescue, we often get asked how to introduce a new cat to an
existing cat or cats.
The best thing to remember is that cats are creatures of habit. I once heard
the analogy that putting a strange cat into another cat’s familiar territory is
the equivalent of putting a human into the middle of a party completely
naked.

The newcomer cat is frightened, beyond uncomfortable, and pretty much
horrified.
The best way to adapt a cat to a new home that already has a head
honcho/resident cat is as follows:

  1. Of course, make sure your new cat has tested negative for FIV/FeLV,
has had all its vaccinations, has had a thorough veterinary exam, and
is spayed or neutered before allowing him to be around your other cat
    (s)
  2. Set up a quiet room with a litter box, food, water, and a blanket to sit
on and close the door with the new cat inside. This way the new cat
and your present cat can smell each other under the door and kind of
get acquainted without having any chance of getting into an
“argument” that could be unpleasant at the very least!
  3. After a few days, open the door and see how they two are doing. Don’t
expect for them to be best friends. They may never be. Even though
cats don’t pay much attention to each other, they do enjoy having a
little companion in the house nonetheless. As long as there is no
physical aggression, you’re on the right track.
  4. If they do seem uncomfortable or it looks like things may get ugly, go
back to #2 and repeat until things calm down a bit.

We have found that most pets do best with a favorite friend in the house
whom they can count on to always be there. It’s calming and therapeutic for
all concerned.

Of course, be sure to check out the cat rescue organizations in your
community to find a great feline companion for your favorite kitty!
