With the summer months upon us, most of us are looking forward to
enjoying the beautiful outdoors with our four-legged family members!
However, nothing can spoil a fun afternoon outdoors like an unexpected
emergency.

Here are a few ways to be prepared for the unexpected –

1. Be sure to keep a pet first aid book handy. The American Red Cross offers
a very useful guide and it also comes in pocket and DVD form. Check with
the Red Cross to see if you can obtain a copy (they give a complimentary
copy if you take their Pet First Aid Certification class) or check  with your
favorite book store’s “pets” section for other pet first aid books.

2. Sign up for the American Red Cross’s Pet First Aid Class. This is an
excellent way to learn what to do for your pet in case of emergency!

3.  Check out the American Humane Society’s website for their list of
common household plants, cleaners, and other substances that are
poisonous to pets. You can also find this information on the LINKS page of
the Sniffles and Friends website. Keep the number of the ASPCA’s poison
control help desk on hand at all times – in such instances every second
counts! 1-888-426-4435.

4.  Put together a doggie first aid kit (Note: The American Red Cross
provides pet first aid kits to those who take their class). You can find a list
of “must haves” for your kit on Petfinder.com or ask your vet for advice.

5. Make a plan. Write up a disaster/emergency plan so you’re prepared for
anything.

Chances are that you’ll never need any of the above, but it’s always best to
be informed and knowledgeable just in case.

Have a great summer and enjoy our exciting city with your beautiful pets!
