Summer is lots of fun for us, but it can be a lonesome time for our furry
friends! Pets are often left alone indoors while we’re out having fun. There
are plenty of ways to include our dogs in our summer activities. Besides,
dogs are the best friends to include in our outdoor fun!
Playing hide and seek is always fun! Whether you’re outside in the yard or
enjoying a community park, hide and seek provides your dog with mental
stimulation, and offers him an opportunity to utilize his scent skills. Give
your dog a “sit” command and find a place to hide. Call him and let him find
you. This is also a great rainy day activity. Just don’t make it too complicated.
Playing tag is also always fun!
Dog agility has quickly become a favorite outdoor activity of dogs and their
families. Not only does this doggie sport offer a challenge and a sense of
friendly competition, it’s great outdoor exercise and mental stimulation!
Check out the North American Dog Agility Council for further information on
this exciting and fast-growing sport! http://www.nadac.com/
Dogs love being in the water as much as we do! It’s a great way to cool off in
the hot summer months, and it’s also great fun! Whether you’re in an ocean,
lake, or in a backyard kiddie pool, your dog will love splashing and playing in
the water!
Go for a long walk on the beach. Since we’re so close to the ocean, take
your dog along for a relaxing and cool walk on the beach. Pay attention to
safety rules and leash laws in the community you choose, and of course,
keep an eye on your dog for obvious safety reasons. Simply walking on the
beach is an excellent way to keep your pet’s tendons, ligaments, and leg
muscles in good shape! Don’t forget your leash, a water bottle, and, of
course your dog’s ID tag!
Go for a ride in the car. Even if you’re just running a quick errand to the
post office, picking up your dry cleaning at the drive-through, or picking the
kids up at camp, invite your dog to join you for the ride. NEVER LEAVE YOUR
DOG UNATTENDED IN THE CAR, EVEN FOR A FEW MINUTES!
Dogs are our best friends – always invite Fido to join you whenever safety
allows, especially during the summer!
